What a forward deployed engineer does
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works from inside a customer's organization instead of from the product team. Palantir coined the title for engineers sent to customer sites to make its platform work on real data; AI companies now use it for the same job.
The week is spent with the customer's people and systems: learning the real workflow, writing the code and integrations that connect it to the product, and getting the result into production.

- Deployment Strategist
- Same seat inside the customer, but the job is choosing what to build and driving the outcome. The FDE writes the software.
- Solutions Engineer
- Works with a customer through evaluation and proof of concept. An FDE stays after the sale and builds the production system.
- Deployment Engineer
- Gets the product installed and running in the customer environment. An FDE builds new software on top of it.
